The haunting textures of her most recent canvasses betray a chilling—while liberatory—awareness of exile. Humphrey acknowledges an urbanized past while disrupting and problematizing assumptions of fixity, linearity, and domesticity. Her work is at once severe and playful, centered and marginal, governed and anarchic. Its almost musical vocabulary underscores the polyphony of formal influences populating the artist’s personal history.
